7. Weekly Computer Assignments

Description:

After I have introduced the basic programs that we will be using in September and have allowed time for exploration I proceed to assign activities. These activities are set up for the children to follow step by step.

Using the ClarisWorks/AppleWorks word processor, I set up a direction sheet using the icons in the programs to make it easier for the children to follow. The program Flash-It helps a great deal as it allows you to copy the icon image quickly and use it in your document.

Materials:

Macintosh Computer, ClarisWorks for Kids, Flash-It, ClarisWorks/AppleWorks

Procedures:

The child opens At Ease

Go to the ClarisWorks/AppleWorks, ClarisWorks for Kids menu

Find the writing icon

Find draw and write

Type their story

Listen to it

Save it on their At Ease file.

I have come up with a simple chart that I have hanging on each computer cart. Each cart has two signs. One sign says: "I haven't been on the computer today." The other one says: "I have been on the computer today." I place a clothespin with the child's name on the first sign. As the child completes the assigned task, he moves the clothespin to the other chart. This makes it easy for me to look around the room and see who hasn't completed the task for the day.

When every child has completed the assignment, I put out a new one for them to follow. I select one student per week to be the computer helper. This person answers questions when I'm not available. I have given them a special badge to wear during class.

Beginning in October I have a parent visit, once a week, for an hour, to oversee the children as they practice different tasks on the computer.
